Rules Regarding Electrical Devices
and the Process for Registering and Inspecting Them
What personal electronic devices are allowed in the dormitory?
- small kitchen appliances (microwave, electric kettle, coffee maker, sandwich maker, air fryer, hand blender, hair dryer)
- entertainment electronics (e.g., TV, Xbox, radio, etc.)
- devices needed for studying (e.g., laptop, tablet, cell phone, etc.)
What personal electronic devices are NOT allowed in the dorm?
- non-human-powered vehicles and their batteries and chargers (e.g., electric scooters, motorcycles)—these consume a lot of power and are also a fire hazard
- large electronic appliances (e.g., refrigerators, washing machines)—these also consume a lot of power, take up too much space, and are unnecessary since the rooms and buildings are well-equipped
- fire-hazardous appliances (e.g., irons*, pizza ovens, open-face sandwich toasters, electric kettles, cast-iron hot plates**, electric radiators, space heaters, and fan heaters)
*Students can borrow irons and vacuum cleaners from the front desk in both buildings
**Since every apartment on Múzeum Street has its own stoves, no hot plates are permitted here
If you are unsure whether a specific appliance or type of appliance is permitted, please ask the dormitory administration (kollegium@ppke.hu) or the Maintenence Manager in person.
Unauthorized devices will be confiscated by University staff; their owners may retrieve them from the dormitory office, but must then remove them from the building as soon as possible.
Registration and Inspection of Electrical Devices
Which devices must be registered?
Anything that conducts the 230-volt power from the wall outlet—for example, microwaves, hair dryers, (personal, non-dorm) desk lamps, as well as extension cords and multi-outlet adapters. Most laptop chargers must also be registered (the only exceptions are those whose adapters, like cell phone chargers, are built into the power plug and therefore do not carry the 230-volt current running through the wall).
The following do not need to be registered:
- devices that run on batteries or rechargeable batteries (however, chargers for battery-powered devices often do need to be registered)
- cell phone chargers: most cell phone chargers convert the electricity directly into low-voltage direct current within the charging head, so these do not need to be inspected. Laptop chargers designed in this way also do not need to be registered.
The registration process:
Immediately after moving into the dormitory, or upon bringing in new electrical devices that require registration, you must fill out this form (on paper or electronically) and email it to the Maintenence Manager (Ferenc Jákli at jakli.ferenc.gabor@ppke.hu on Bihari utca, and Gergely Hényel at henyel.gergely@ppke.hu on Múzeum utca).
If someone failed to register after moving in, they must send the completed forms to the building manager no later than 12 hours before the inspection, or print them out and place them next to the devices.
How and when does the inspection take place?
Once enough registration forms have been collected, at a previously announced time, at least two professionals from Maintenance Department (of whom at least one must be an electrician) will go through the rooms and inspect the devices (to ensure they does not pose a safety or fire hazard). The inspected devices will receive a sticker certifying that they can be used in the building during that academic year. Devices that do not receive a sticker or have not been registered may not be used in the building and must be taken home as soon as possible.
How should you prepare?
Before the inspection, in the building on Bihari Street, clear everything off the table in the common area of your apartment (on Múzeum utca, choose any table in the room for this purpose) and place there all electronic devices to be inspected (along with the printed forms). If you submitted the form via email, you only need to write your name next to the device so it can be identified.
What about those whose devices were already inspected last year?
Those must also be re-inspected every year. It’s a good idea to keep the electronically completed registration form from the previous year so you can simply update it and send the new one in during the following year.
Do I have to be present when they inspect the devices?
You can be in the room, but it’s not required—just like during a room inspection. In accordance with the rules, at least two staff members will enter every room. They will inspect the devices on the desk and then leave the signed form there.
What happens if I haven’t brought something from home yet or plan to buy something later?
You have to fill out and send in a registration form for those as well. Once enough registration forms have been collected, there will be another inspection. If this isn’t scheduled for the near future, you’ll need to bring the device in person to the Sophianum building in Mikszáth tér for inspection. The Maintenence Manager can provide more details about this.
What happens if I don’t register a device, or if I register it but it fails the inspection and doesn’t receive a sticker?
Every device requiring registration must be inspected. If, during the next room inspection, staff find a device that has not been inspected, they must confiscate it in accordance with the House Rules. The use of devices that fail the inspection (typically because they are broken, damaged, or not permitted in the dorm) must be discontinued immediately, and they must be taken home as soon as possible. The staff may also confiscate these devices.
